Wildlife hotspot: Oostvaarders plassenWildlife hotspot: Oostvaarders-Plassen

I was in Flevoland a few days ago. About 40 minutes north east of Amsterdam, in a nature sanctuary called the Oostvaardersplassen.

The area is a bold recreation of what ecologists think the region was like a few thousand years ago. I only ventured into a non-restricted section of the park because access to the main area is tightly controlled. In this area, herds of red deer, wild horses and Heck cattle roam around in the thousands.

My expectations were pretty low. It was the middle of the day and quite warm. The most I expected to see were some insects and geese. Well, how wrong I was. I went into a bird observation hut just to see if a stray heron was still around and came across three red deer standing not ten metres away, leg deep in the water.

After some hasty shots, they quickly retreated back into the reeds. I then ventured further into the park and came across some wild horses fighting and plenty of birds. Below I have included the best pics of my short but rewarding visit. Enjoy!
